Industry Description

Fashion merchandising courses will prepare you to enter the exciting and glamorous fashion industry. The courses you can take individually or as part of a degree program will give you a solid, practical overview of the fashion industry combined with advertising and marketing tools. Specifically you can study topics such as merchandise selection and preparation, staging and promoting fashion merchandise, retailing and marketing techniques. The fashion merchandising courses you take will cover home and furniture fashions, not just clothing. You will also explore advances in technology being used or developed in the fashion industry such as computer design.

This industry is very competitive so you are advised to take courses that could lead you to a degree in fashion merchandising which will provide the credentials many employers are looking for. A two-year associate’s degree or a four-year bachelor’s degree may be all you need to get started. Fashion merchandising courses will teach you the skills and training necessary for an entry-level management or executive training positions in the fashion industry. A good portfolio containing samples of your best work as a student will also go a long way toward convincing an employer that you will serve them well. Possible employment opportunities include: Assistant Merchandise Stylist or Customer Service Representative for a fashion manufacturer; Showroom Sales Representative in the fashion wholesaling business; Assistant Buyer or Visual Merchandising Assistant for a fashion retailer; and Advertising Representative or Stylist for an advertising agency.
