Industry Description
Illustrations are part of almost every aspect of our lives. You just need to look inside any newspaper, magazine, advertisement, CD cover, packaging, technical manual, scientific or medical text and you will find numerous illustration examples. You could be the one creating those illustrations! Employers are looking for talented persons who have completed a degree from an illustration school. A Bachelor degree from an illustration school will usually require about four years of full time formal learning. There are also opportunities to acquire diplomas or parts of degrees through online and correspondence courses. Most illustration schools will require a Grade 12 or equivalency diploma. Some might additionally ask for preliminary portfolio to show work from high school classes or previous experience.
Illustration schools will start you off with the basic concepts of designing by hand or by computer. Upon graduation from an accredited illustration school you will have the creativity and finely honed drawing ability to produce professional portfolios using traditional and digital media for a wide range of applications and clients. Through the instruction and guidance of a team of talented faculty, you will be thoroughly trained in additional topics such as color theory and storytelling. Illustration schools will also offer a variety of specialty concentrations that may include editorial, promotional expression, cartooning, feature film animation, the graphic novel, informational and children's book illustration.
Whether you aspire to illustrate books, want to animate for movies, or design graphics for computer games, you should be planning on courses from accredited illustration schools.
